Which Conversion Makes Sense, And Which Wastes Time

Not all audio conversions are equal. Some preserve quality, some lose it irreversibly. The rules:

  • WAV → FLAC: Lossless to lossless, ~50% smaller
  • FLAC → WAV: Same audio, larger file (for legacy software)
  • WAV → MP3 320kbps: Negligible quality loss, much smaller
  • M4A → MP3: Both lossy but similar quality at 192+ kbps

  • MP3 → FLAC: Wraps lossy in lossless — file gets bigger, quality stays bad

The lossy ceiling rule: once audio has been encoded as MP3/AAC/OGG, the quality ceiling is permanent. Converting to a higher bitrate or to a lossless format only changes file size — not quality. Always preserve the original lossless master (WAV/FLAC) if you have it, and re-encode for distribution.
