Typing Speed Test

WPM is calculated by dividing the total number of characters typed (including spaces) by 5 to get the word count, then dividing by the time elapsed in minutes. A "word" is standardized as 5 characters to ensure consistent measurement across different texts.

The average typing speed is around 40 WPM. A speed of 60-80 WPM is considered good for most office jobs. Professional typists and programmers often type at 80-120 WPM. Competitive typists can exceed 150 WPM.

Practice regularly with proper finger placement on the home row (ASDF JKL;). Focus on accuracy first, then speed. Avoid looking at the keyboard, use all 10 fingers, and take typing tests daily. Consistent 15-minute practice sessions are more effective than occasional long sessions.

Typing accuracy is the percentage of characters typed correctly out of total characters typed. High accuracy (95%+) is crucial because errors slow you down with corrections. A typist with 50 WPM and 98% accuracy is more productive than one with 70 WPM and 85% accuracy.

While the test works on mobile devices, it is best suited for physical keyboards. Typing speed tests are designed to measure touch-typing skills, which are most relevant on desktop or laptop keyboards.
