What Most PDF Mergers Quietly Get Wrong
PDF merging looks like a trivial copy-paste, but PDFs are layered documents — metadata, bookmarks, annotations, forms, signatures. Cheap mergers strip all of it. Here's what to watch for.
Bookmarks: usually destroyed
If your source PDFs have a clickable Table of Contents (bookmarks on the left sidebar in Adobe Reader), most online mergers throw these away. The merged file has all the pages but no nav structure — terrible for any document longer than 30 pages. We preserve top-level bookmarks during merge so the combined TOC still works.
Form fields: collide
When you merge two PDFs that both have a form field named "name" or "email", most tools either drop duplicates or keep both — both wrong. Our merge keeps every form field with its original page intact; if duplicates exist, they remain independently fillable. Important for combining multi-page government forms.
Digital signatures: invalidated
A digitally-signed PDF (e.g., DSC-signed contract, Aadhaar e-signed document) loses signature validity the moment any byte of the file changes — including by being merged. This is by design — signatures protect the exact original bytes. If signature validity matters legally, never merge after signing. Merge first, then sign the combined PDF.
File size: not additive
Merging a 2 MB and a 3 MB PDF can produce a 5 MB file — or sometimes 8 MB if both used the same fonts duplicated, or 4 MB if our merger deduplicates shared resources. Don't assume linear addition. If the merged file exceeds an upload limit, run it through Compress PDF rather than trying to merge smaller batches.
Page-rotation trap: if one PDF has a landscape page that's been auto-rotated by the source software, the rotation flag travels with the page when merged. The merged output may show that page rotated 90° even though it looked fine standalone. Always preview the merged file before sending to a recipient. If you see rotation issues, use Rotate PDF to fix the specific pages.
