Understanding Your Electricity Bill

An Indian electricity bill typically consists of these components:

1

Energy Charge

The main charge based on units (kWh) consumed, calculated using slab rates. This is typically 60-80% of your bill.

2

Fixed / Demand Charge

A monthly fixed amount based on your sanctioned load (kW), regardless of consumption. Varies ₹25-200/month across states.

3

Electricity Duty / Tax

State-imposed duty (5-16% of energy charge). Maharashtra has the highest at 16%.

4

Fuel Surcharge (FAC/FPPCA)

Variable charge adjusted quarterly based on actual fuel costs. Can add ₹0.50-1.50/unit to your bill.

Tips to Reduce Your Electricity Bill

Switch to LED

Replace all bulbs with LED. A 9W LED gives the same light as a 60W incandescent, saving 85% energy.

AC at 24°C

Every degree below 24°C increases AC power consumption by 6%. Set to 24-26°C with a ceiling fan.

5-Star Appliances

A 5-star rated fridge uses 30-40% less power than a 3-star. The upfront cost pays back within 2-3 years.

Go Solar

Rooftop solar with PM Surya Ghar subsidy can eliminate your bill. Calculate solar savings →

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find units consumed on my electricity bill?

Look for "Units Consumed" or "kWh" on your electricity bill. It is the difference between current and previous meter readings. You can also check your digital meter directly — it shows cumulative kWh consumption.

What is the difference between telescopic and non-telescopic billing?

In telescopic (slab-wise) billing, each slab rate applies only to units within that range — e.g. first 100 units at ₹3, next 100 at ₹5. In non-telescopic billing (used in Maharashtra), your ENTIRE consumption is charged at the rate of the slab your total falls into.

Why does my actual bill differ from this calculator?

Actual bills may include additional charges like fuel adjustment cost (FAC), meter rent, arrears, government subsidy deductions, and rounding. These vary monthly and by your specific connection. This calculator gives an estimate based on published tariff rates.

Which state has the cheapest electricity in India?

For low consumption (under 100 units), Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Haryana have some of the lowest rates (₹1.90-2.50/unit). Delhi offers 200 units free per month. Punjab offers 300 units free. For high consumption, Gujarat and UP tend to be more affordable.

How can I reduce my electricity bill?

Switch to LED lights and 5-star rated appliances, use AC at 24-26°C, switch off appliances when not in use, consider solar panels (government subsidies available), and shift heavy usage to off-peak hours if your state offers time-of-day tariffs.

What is connected load (kW) and where do I find it?

Connected load is the total wattage of all electrical appliances in your home, measured in kilowatts (kW). It is mentioned on your electricity bill under "Sanctioned Load" or "Connected Load". Typical homes have 1-5 kW load.
